Event Timeline
The journey of Israk & Mikraj occurred in a single miraculous night, approximately in 621 CE, about a year before the Prophet's Hijrah to Madinah.
The Year of Sadness (Preceding Events)
Before this miraculous journey, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) faced immense challenges. He lost his beloved wife Sayyidatina Khadijah and his protective uncle Abu Talib. He was also rejected and mistreated by the people of Taif, who threw stones at him. The Quraysh boycotted him and his companions, making life extremely difficult.
Journey Begins - Night Departure from Makkah
While sleeping in Umm Hani's house, Angel Jibril (Gabriel) arrived and awakened the Prophet. He brought the Buraq—a miraculous winged creature, smaller than a mule and larger than a donkey, with a human face and the wings of a bird. The Prophet was taken to Masjidil Haram (the Grand Mosque in Makkah).
The Purification at Zamzam
Before the journey, Angel Jibril performed a special purification. He opened the Prophet's chest and washed his heart with water from the well of Zamzam, filling it with faith, certainty, wisdom, and knowledge.
Al-Isra: Journey to Jerusalem
The Prophet mounted the Buraq with Angel Jibril. They traveled through the night from Makkah to Baitul Maqdis (Jerusalem), approximately 1,200 kilometers, completing this journey in just a few hours—what would normally take months of travel. He dismounted at Masjid Al-Aqsa and led the prophets (Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and others) in prayer.
Al-Mikraj: Ascension to the Heavens
From the sacred stone (Muallak) in Jerusalem, the Prophet ascended to the heavens with Angel Jibril. He journeyed through the seven heavens, meeting the great prophets in each:
- First Heaven: Prophet Adam
- Second Heaven: Prophets Yahya (John) and Isa (Jesus)
- Third Heaven: Prophet Yusuf (Joseph)
- Fourth Heaven: Prophet Idris
- Fifth Heaven: Prophet Harun (Aaron)
- Sixth Heaven: Prophet Musa (Moses)
- Seventh Heaven: Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham)
Direct Communion with Allah
The Prophet ascended to Sidratul Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary), where he met Allah directly. Initially, Muslims were commanded to pray 50 times a day. Upon advice from Prophet Musa, the Prophet negotiated with Allah multiple times until the obligation was reduced to 5 daily prayers—with the reward still equivalent to 50.
Visions of Paradise and Hell
The Prophet was shown various scenes during the journey, including visions of paradise and the consequences of actions in the hellfire. He witnessed the deeds of people, including stories of those who were punished for backbiting, eating riba (interest), and other sins.
Return to Makkah
The Prophet returned to Makkah before dawn, descending back through the heavens. He arrived home in less than the time it takes for a candle to burn out. On the way back, he saw caravans heading toward Makkah, which he would later describe as proof of the journey. He slept for only a brief moment before dawn broke.
Sharing the News & Public Reaction
The next morning, the Prophet told his cousin Umm Hani about the journey. When he shared it with Abu Jahl and others, they mocked him severely. Some said he was mad; others called him a magician. However, his trusted companion Abu Bakar believed immediately without doubt, earning him the title "As-Siddiq" (The Truthful).
Spiritual Significance
🙏 The Gift of Five Daily Prayers
The most direct practical result of Israk & Mikraj is the establishment of the five daily prayers (Salah). This is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and was commanded directly by Allah to the Prophet at Sidratul Muntaha. Muslims fulfill this obligation with the spiritual reward equivalent to 50 prayers daily—a mercy from Allah. Without Israk & Mikraj, we would have been obligated to pray 50 times a day instead of five!
⭐ Validation of Prophet Muhammad's Status
Israk & Mikraj demonstrated to the world that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is the chosen Messenger of Allah. This miraculous journey affirmed his prophethood and elevated his status as the final messenger. It proved that Allah had specific plans for him and honored him in ways no other human has been honored—being brought into direct communion with Allah.
💪 Divine Comfort During Trials
This journey came at the most difficult time in the Prophet's life—the "Year of Sadness" when he lost his wife and uncle. It was a sign of Allah's mercy and compassion. Allah rewarded the Prophet's steadfastness with this incredible honor. This event strengthened his faith and resolve to continue the mission of Islam despite overwhelming opposition.
🕊️ Test of Faith in Miracles
The Isra' and Mi'raj was a clear test of faith for people, as it described a miraculous journey beyond normal human experience.
It called believers to trust in Allah's unlimited power and in the truthfulness of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, even when the event seemed impossible to the human mind.
This miracle separates sincere believers from those who only accept what fits their limited understanding, reminding us that true iman includes belief in the unseen and in Allah's extraordinary signs.

Important Lessons
🤝 Trust in Allah During Difficulty
The Prophet endured rejection, loss, and pain yet never wavered. He trusted Allah completely. This teaches us that when facing hardships, we should strengthen our connection with Allah through prayer and maintain unwavering faith. Allah honors those who persist in faith.
🕋 The Centrality of Prayer
That Allah commanded prayers directly—not through an angel—shows the supreme importance of Salah. Prayer is our direct line of communication with the Divine. The fact that it was the most important commandment from this miraculous event emphasizes that prayer is the pillar of faith.
⚖️ Allah's Mercy and Balance
The reduction of prayers from 50 to 5, while maintaining the full reward, demonstrates Allah's perfect balance between expectations and human capability. Allah knows our limits and provides ease. As stated in the Quran, "Allah intends for you ease and not difficulty" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185).

Israk & Mikraj reminds us that reality extends beyond what we can see and understand. The spiritual dimension of existence is real and profound. Our actions have consequences in the spiritual realm, and our ultimate accountability is to Allah.
